Transsexualism affects an estimated 5,000 people in the UK. Medical treatment to enable transsexual people to alter their bodies to match their gender identity is highly successful. The process is known medically as gender reassignment. The Sex Discrimination Act (Sex Discrimination Act) was amended in May 1999 to protect transsexual people against discrimination in employment and vocational training.
