Summary

Public authorities in Scotland can decide how they will meet their duty to promote race equality. The Race Relations Act gives the CRE the power to issue codes of practice, with the approval of Parliament.

This code offers practical guidance to public authorities on how to meet their duty to promote race equality. It includes guidance on both the general duty and specific duties imposed by the Home Secretary. The code’s aim is to help public authorities to adopt good practice and to eliminate racial discrimination. The code should also help the public understand what public authorities have to do, and the role that the public can play.
