Summary
The Equal Pay Act gives women (or men) a right to equal pay for equal work. An employer can only pay a man more than a woman for doing equal work if there is a genuine and material reason for doing so which is not related to sex. The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has issued this revised Code of Practice on Equal Pay in order to provide practical guidance on how to ensure pay is determined without sex discrimination. The revised Code (the Code) is aimed at employers, but employees and their representatives or advisers – for example, from a trade
union, or Citizens Advice Bureau, may also find it useful.
